09. The cart's before the horse
The constant push and pull of the wind, the unrelenting rain and the untouchable tentacles constantly wrenching at his limbs had taken a toll on Glitch’s ability to fight off the pressure of the dark spirit. He may have been adding two and two in his head and coming up with seven, but some part of him felt that somehow, this would work. It had to.
Glitch grabbed DG’s hand and pressed the sword’s handle into it firmly. He wrapped her fingers around it and held them there with both of his own trembling hands. “As long as Thanamoros is in this form, there’s no way to get at him. I need you to listen, DG, and do exactly as I say. Do you trust me?”
DG stared at him, her throat too tight to speak but she nodded. She had always trusted him, her entire life.
“I need you to say it,” Glitch pleaded, his eyes full of desperation.
“You know I trust you,” DG managed to push the words out.
“Then you know I would never do anything to hurt you.”
The young woman watched the flicker of emotion in Glitch’s eyes and shook her head. “Glitch, what are you going to do?”
Glitch squeezed his eyes shut, unable to look at her when he said the words. “I’m going to give Thanamoros a body, a solid form. Mine.”
“No!” DG and Cain, who had been listening silently, cut him off.
“I’m asking you to trust me, both of you,” Glitch’s voice was tight. “Once he’s got my body, you’re going to use this to kill him.”
“You big, dumb idiot! You’ll die, too, don’t you realize that?” Cain howled from his place on the ground, feet digging frantically into the soft, soaked dirt.
“Wyatt, just...just, wait your turn,” Glitch threw him a flustered look before turning back to DG. “This is where it ends, you know it as well as I do. If we let this monster get away, it will keep coming after me and your family. Tell me you’ll do this, DG. I need to know you won’t hesitate. It’s in our hands now.”
Hearing Raw’s words thrown back at her made the breath catch in her throat. She knew, without a doubt, that she had absolutely no choice.
The act would kill her just as absolutely as if she turned the blade on herself. Her father used to say ‘the cart’s before the horse’ whenever things got turned around and backwards. She thought to herself how very true that was now, how very wrong it was that in order to save Glitch, she would have to wield the weapon that could kill him.
“I can’t,” she choked, tears streaming unnoticed down her face.
“You can,” Glitch told her firmly, releasing the sword into her hands and standing upright. He saw it in her eyes, knew that she had found the strength. “Don’t hesitate. And whatever you do, do not let go.”
Glitch fell to his knees and grabbed Cain’s head in his hands, kissing him hard and with every bit of his heart. “I love you. I trust you. When this is over, don’t let go of me.”
With those words, without waiting for a response, he stood and walked into the nucleus of the beast. He dropped his resistance and let himself be taken.
The darkness seeped into the willing body so quickly it was a shock to the other two forced to watch. It seemed to turn night into day in a blink of an eye, the encompassing shadows suddenly and horribly gone.
Glitch’s head was thrown back, eyes squeezed shut and DG knew she didn’t have time to spare. The longer she waited, the more control Glitch would lose over the thing possessing him.
Gripping the handle of the sword in one shaking hand, she drew her strength and drove the shining blade through her keeper’s chest, just below the ribcage and all the way through.
Immediately, a dark red flow appeared around the wound and Glitch choked out a low, wet keening sound. DG kept her promise and held onto the blade, feeling her power enhanced by that of the sword and that of Glitch himself.
The advisor shuddered violently. As DG and Cain watched in sickened fascination, a cascade of thousands of tiny glass shards seemed to shower from the possessed man, raining to the ground and disappearing as they landed.
DG looked up from the hauntingly beautiful display and was met by a pair of dark, weary eyes and a ghost of a smile. “You can let go now,” Glitch whispered, his already dark lips tinged bright red.
“Oh, god,” DG rasped and instantly released the sword, the impact of what she had just done striking her square in the chest.
Glitch’s legs gave out and he dropped heavily to his knees.
