So, our TV died this morning. Like, it was working last night and this morning, it wouldn't stay on for more than 2 seconds (literally) and the screen never even came on. We tried everything - unplugging, holding buttons down...but since the thing wouldn't stay on long enough to do anything and nothing came on the screen, there was no way for us to experiment with resetting anything. NO idea - the thing died. All several hundred pounds of it (UGH). The monstrous beast is now sitting on our floor, taking up ten square feet of space and with any luck we will get someone strong to get it out of our living room - the two of us can't even lift it TOGETHER. (It's just a 32" screen but it's the old fat kind, about 4 years old.)

ANYWAY. In comes our new SHINY. After work we headed to the nearest place that Anndie found what we were looking for with the best price (as we are cheap) and lo, we have a new Visio 32" flat panel TV. Is gonna take a bit of adjusting our eyes to the new screen, but OMG it is THIN and weighs 20 pounds. SO much easier to move and it's awesome.

\o/ Now to pull out the Tin Man dvds and do the annual re-watch (as I just watched Wizard of OZ over the weekend). Whoot!

How different is the picture, really? I've got one of the old, fat clunkers and have been giving passing thought to replacing with a flatscreen so as to save some furniture space, but I'm not that keen on dealing with the expense. I'd love to hear about your experiences, though.

It's definitely a more clear, clean picture - takes the 'pixel' effect away that sometimes happens with cartoons and such. We were playing with the picture settings, found that the 'panoramic' setting worked best for having everything on screen without cutting off tops of heads and such, so it's nice that there are tons of ways to manipulate how much you see, the color/contrast/etc settings, etc.

Also - we tested out the HD channels on our cable, comparing the HD version of one channel to the normal version and it is REALLY obvious now how much better those work compared to the non-HD. Granted, we spent all evening watching 'Family Guy,' so our experience thus far has been with a bright cartoon. I'm sure when we watch something live action we'll see some differences.

One thing I've been wondering about recently is "NCIS." I've noticed that they use a very soft-focus lens in the last season or so and I'm curious as to whether they started that in response to the HD thing. So if we watch a new one in HD, will the clarity will balance out the soft-focus and look 'normal.' We shall have to see! :D

(But mostly - oh my GAWD is it lighter and so much easier to move around. \o/)

Thank you! That's good info. I haven't actually watched tv in ages, so the info about DVDs is the most relevant to me, but I appreciate all of it. I'm not in any rush to buy a New Thing but when it does come down to it, this will be very useful.
