Title: Hands
Rating: PG
Characters: Glitch/Cain
Summary: The simplicity of saving a life.
Warning: Horrifically sappy.

Hands.

Nothing but darkness and bitter, heart-stopping cold came before those hands, strong and trembling and unyielding, pulled at him with a kind of relentless desperation that he had never known before in his life.

He's not breathing.

Glitch didn't know who they were talking to, or about, or anything else for that matter. He heard the words, felt the stiff, frozen clothes being dragged from his too-sensitive skin. Wanted to protest, to tell them he was cold but he couldn't force his body to fight.

But those hands - he trusted them. Those hands saved him and he would deny them nothing. Warm and calloused and sturdy, they held his chin up and pulled his mouth open. A rush of hot, welcome air pushed into his lungs and insisted that he live.

The first harsh, ragged breath he pulled in was rewarded by a shaky stroke of one of those hands over his head, following the line of his zipper.

When the dark receded the next time, the sharp, biting cold had been replaced by the fires of hell.

But those hands were there again, soothing him, cooling his heated flesh and drawing him away from the easy esape of death.

...fever is killing him...can't breathe...

Every breath he drew was a knife in his chest; scorching steel digging deeper and deeper into his lungs.

The hand resting on his chest was the only thing keeping that blade at bay and he knew if it were not for that hand, he would already be gone.

~*~

...don't go, sweetheart...love you...

Hands on his face, fingers tracing the edges restlessly. A thumb stroking just below his ear. Palm pressed possessively against his jaw.

A wet, rasping cough escaped as Glitch struggled to bring himself out of his own mind and into the world where those hands cared for him, more than he ever thought possible.

"Glitch?"

The room was dark and the only light came from a lamp on the bedside table. A few slow blinks cleared the view and the face of the man who owned those hands came into focus. "Cain," he whispered weakly, managing a tiny smile of triumph. He was sitting up, propped against what had to be every pillow on this floor of the island palace. The position made it easier for him to breathe and for that he was grateful.

"You scared the life out of me," Cain confessed with a broken laugh, reaching up to stroke Glitch's hair.

"...happen'd?" Glitch licked at dry lips as he asked, was quickly provided with a sip of water from a nearby glass.

"Storm," Cain answered in his usual short fashion. The slow, gentleness of his hands contrasted with the abrupt explanation. "You were helping close down the front of the house when the weight of the snow forced one of the window ledges to break off. It came down, knocked you down and the both of you went through the ice. Took us a good ten minutes to get you out of the water. You -" He stopped suddenly, shook his head sharply.

Glitch could see the brightness in Cain's eyes, see the fear and the love struggling to make the first tears fall. But Glitch didn't want that. He wanted to hear Cain say the words again, the words that never came until Glitch had been unconscious.

Lifting his too-heavy arm, Glitch grasped the wandering hand and pressed his cheek into the palm, closing his eyes at how safe and warm it made him feel. "Love you, too," he managed finally, returning the words spoken when Cain thought Glitch couldn't hear.

Cain drew a sharp breath, his hand trembling against Glitch's cheek. He waited until Glitch looked at him again before leaning in to kiss him. This time, the lips against his own were not blue and unresponsive; they were pink and warm and alive.

Hands that had saved a life, hands that never gave up and had done everything they could to keep Glitch with him. Hands that now slid around Glitch's back and pulled Glitch toward him, resting against him and holding him close. Hands that would never, never let Glitch go.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. *content*

The hand resting on his chest was the only thing keeping that blade at bay and he knew if it were not for that hand, he would already be gone.

Oh, that made me wibble. Hang onto him, Cain! And Glitch wanting to hear Cain's bedside declaration again...

Lovely!

I'm so glad you liked it! It's just a tiny thing to get me going again - been a few months, getting rusty and all. Thank you so much! :D

*wibbles*

It would take something like this to get Cain to admit his feelings, wouldn't it? And if Glitch hadn't heard him and said "Love you too," I wonder if Cain would EVER have said anything like that again! They were both frozen, in a way, and both thawed out. :-)

*wibbles with you* Cain does seem a bit repressed when it comes to feeling and such. Man of few words and all. *grin* Though you gotta love how tactile he is - lends itself well to us slashers! \o/ Thanks so much for reading, I always love your observations!

Awww, thank you so much! Heehee - I love hearing from newbies to the fandom, it's always so wonderful to know our beautiful little world is still drawing new people! :D

Oh, yes - Glitch is extremely addicting!! But I'm just glad you found your way to us and yes, I'm still very much in love with Tin Man (one of the rare few these days, it seems!). I'm assuming you've been playing with the Master List of fic on my journal - it's mostly up-to-date except for the most recent few.

Thank you so much for reading and enjoying my writing! I'm thrilled to have you here and look forward to giving you more to read (including the larger "Common Enemy" AU when my brain can wrap around it properly)!
