Watching Wizard of Oz...

So, Anndie got me the ULTIMATE WoO box set for Xmas - 70th anniverary, 4 discs of stuff and extra films from the Oz 'verse (pre-1939 version), and books and such. It's epic and I love it.

Anyway, I'm watching the original film to start with. And there's a few things that have caught my attention that I never really noticed before, pretty much in relation to Tin Man (of course).

One of the Tinman's lyrics from his song:
"I'd lock it with a zipper, if I only had a heart." HUH.

And the Wicked Witch's "real world" counterpart (who takes Toto) from the beginning is named Elmira Gulch. And the cop who gives DG the ticket in the diner is named Elmer Gulch. HUH.

"Don't cry now! We haven't got the oil can with us and you're squeaking enough as it is." - Scarecrow to Tinman. *snicker* Such a domestic little line.

I'm sure I'll add more thoughts as I continue watching it. Watch this space for edits. :D

EDIT: ....apparently they was a reason for Dorothy's last line to Scarecrow, "I'll miss you most of all." They originally intended to include a subplot where Dorothy and Hunk (back in Kansas) were supposed to have an "innocent romance." HUH. *hides from Keri and her 'I told you so's.'

O_O The Elmer/Elmira Gulch thing... He must be related to the witch who possessed Az in some loooong forgotten blood line! Which means perhaps people of the OZ, at least the eldest like the Queen and Ahamo.. have traces of bloodlines from the other side! OMG *flails* THIS IS BRILLIANT.

Plz find more kthnx, luv. <3

I know! It's absolutely fascinating stuff I'm finding. Don't worry, I'll be posting more stuff as I go through the films. There are about 8 more Oz films on these discs, most are before the 1939 film and one is from 1990. I'm so excited by all of this stuff!! So much Oz 'verse stuff to read into and interpret. (Especially looking forward to the 1914 film "His Majesty, The Scarecrow of Oz.")

*squee* I'm being good, though, and saving it to watch over the course of the next few days. So I don't run out too fast. :D

Also? It actually says "Omaha" ON THE BALLOON the Wizard is taking back to Kansas! I always thought it said Kansas State Fair but it doesn't - it says "State Fair Omaha." And since we know Ahamo is Omaha backwards, THIS INTRIGUES ME.

I've seen the 1990 film once. It includes some elements from The Marvelous Land of Oz. At least, that I can remember. It's been awhile. *sheepish grin*

My younger sister and I picked up on the Elmira/Elmer Gulch thing on the first watching. Of course, we have the 1939 film on VHS already.

Must find this ultimate set of Wizard of Oz goodies. Yes. *nodnod*

ETA: I think I found it on Amazon.com already. And I have a gift card. *debates whether to use it for this or something else*

*grin* Yeah, I have the '39 film on VHS, the 50th anniversary edition that came out when I was a kid. And I watched it a number of times over the years. But clearly there are details that my brain just doesn't hold onto. *grin*

Neat! We found it at Costco for $45, so yeah. *WIN!* It's quite awesome if you're a fan of the whole 'verse, I think. So far, I'm very pleased with it!

We have that same edition ourselves! W00t! I grew up watching it. It's still one of my all-time favorite movies. *giggle* It's all right. Different brains hold onto different things.

*pause*

I wonder if I could turn that into a Glitch-n-Ambrose thing...

*shakes self*

It's for sale on Amazon.com Marketplace for $19.99. My gift card is for $25. Ooooh, the agonies of decisions! *tears hair out*

NICE! That's a great price if it's the same one. There are 2 different 70th anniversary editions out now. There is a smaller one, a 2-disc set and the one I got. Mine is in a big rectangular box, 4-discs, books, and a watch. (I have no idea about the watch - it's a neat collectable but yeah....of no use..*giggle*). If that's the one you found, then whoot, great price! :D

And yes, I do believe that Glitch and Ambrose hold on to different things. I think Lionille has had some great stories using that idea, such as "Mainspring." I'd love to see more variations on that theme! *feeds your bunnies*

The one I found is only 3 discs. Or I may be mistaken. *goes to look* Nope, it was three discs. Amazon.com has an ultimate collector's edition that's five discs. O.o *forces self to stop looking*

No, I don't need more bunnies! *hands over ears* Lalalala!

[identity profile] surranndie.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's weird! The numbers are different than the ones I've seen. OH! Wait - mine does TECHNICALLY have 5 discs - the 5th is a digital copy, I forgot about it.

you're squeaking enough as it is

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!! This must go into a fic. It should be a challenge somewhere. I'd love to hear everybody's take on WHY Glitch would be saying this to Cain. :D

They originally intended to include a subplot where Dorothy and Hunk (back in Kansas) were supposed to have an "innocent romance.

OK, leaving that out was the best executive decision EVER.

*giggles* I KNOW! My brain totally said "That's a Glitch line!" :D *ponders how to use it*

I completely agree. The whole idea of any kind of actual onscreen romance in either Wizard of Oz OR Tin Man is just unappealing. The open-ended, innocent feel of the stories leaves the viewer with much more to work with as far as interpretation. I'm glad they left it alone!
