It was a full two weeks before Wyatt let Glitch go to the bathroom by himself and even then he was waiting outside the door. His dedication paid off, as he was right there to catch Glitch as the recovering man stumbled over his own sock-covered feet.
“That one was your fault,” Glitch huffed but allowed himself to be guided back to bed. He had grown accustomed to the steadying arm around his waist and was always comforted by the warmth the constant contact seeped into him.
“How so?” Cain played along easily, using his free hand to pull back the covers. He kept his hands nearby as Glitch eased his way under the blankets, helping to settle them back in place while Glitch leaned against his mound of pillows.
“You make me think too much about what I’m doing rather that just...doing it,” Glitch waved a hand indistinctly.
Cain sat down on the bed next to Glitch’s legs and just smiled at the other man. He was delighted at the progress they had made. Everyone had helped Glitch to reacquire his coordination and retrain his body to obey the commands coming from his brain through a newly repaired path. The short but intense therapy sessions had built up Glitch’s energy and sped up his recovery more than even his surgeon had hoped for.
His silence lasted a bit too long because Glitch made an odd noise and reached up. “What? Is my zipper undone?”
“No, I’m just...it’s good to hear you sounding so normal. For you,” Cain amended with a smirk.
“I know, it’s very nice to be understood again,” Glitch agreed. “Have I told...um...the alchemist...”
“Morley.”
“Yes, him. Have I thanked him for his fine work yet?”
“Several times now,” Cain smiled fondly. “But I’m sure he appreciates it every time. In fact, I hear the Queen offered him a job.”
“Really? That’s great! Doing what?” Glitch straightened with interest.
“She wants him to work on a way to reverse the brain removal; find some way to give innocent people like you their brains back,” Cain said. “He’ll probably want to talk to you when you’re up to it.”
Glitch nodded. “Anything to help the cause,” he replied with a soft sigh. “We’re still going to have a ‘melting’ party, right?”
Wyatt grinned and grasped Glitch’s hand effortlessly. “Just waiting for you to get well enough to come with us. You’ll get the honor of lighting the fire. We’ve already piled all the things we want to burn into the basement: that table we found, Az is throwing in some of her armor plated outfits, DG wants to melt some keys from the Otherside for some reason, and I’ve saved the remote and the implant for you to toss into the fire yourself.”
“How sweet of you,” Glitch laughed brightly. “Oh, hey...I remember you asking me something about colors. Was that you?”
“You remember that?” Cain raised his eyebrows.
“Technically, I remember most things, just not in the same order in which they occurred. Memories aren’t where I left them. It’s usually the context that throws me off so it feels like a crazy, mixed-up jumble,” Glitch made a swirling motion with his hand.
Wyatt gave a nod. “I asked you a few simple questions before the surgery to help you relax and fall asleep. One of the questions was if I was ever going to find out your favorite color and you said yes.”
“Did I? That was optimistic of me,” Glitch looked pleased. “Well, if I had to choose only one color...I like green, because it reminds me of how the city used to be. Oh, but silver...I love how it shines. Pink is great, too. Gotta love a good splash of pink in your clothes, it really adds character.”
“Trust you to give me an answer like that to a straightforward question,” Cain shook his head affectionately.
Glitch shifted, brushing his leg up against Wyatt’s hip. “We, uh, haven’t already had that talk we were planning, have we? I don’t remember.”
Cain’s grip tightened. “No, we haven’t,” he answered honestly.
“No time like the present,” Glitch’s smile faded and he turned his head to look out the glass balcony doors. “Even before all of this happened, I couldn’t imagine going on with my life without you. You’ve been such a good friend, the best I’ve ever had. But then you had to go and take it to a whole new place.” He rolled his head back so he could look at Wyatt. “Every time I wake up, you’re right there. And I don’t want to imagine a day, after I’m completely recovered, when you won’t be there.”
“I don’t plan to be anywhere else,” Cain’s voice was nothing more than a harsh rasp. He cleared his throat and leaned forward, resting his forehead against Glitch’s. “Watching you almost die on that table...it made me realize that we really don’t have any excuse to waste time. Yours was the first real face I saw after far too many annuals locked up; I should have realized it right then.”
Glitch slid his hand up Cain’s arm, warm and alive. “Realized what?”
“That some day I would fall in love with that beautiful, expressive face,” Cain confessed in an almost shy tone. Unwilling to hold off any longer, he brought his hand up to cup Glitch’s jaw and leaned in for a kiss. He tilted his head the same way as Glitch and their noses collided, causing Glitch to snort and laugh.
Cain couldn’t help but chuckle at his own awkwardness. He took advantage of Glitch’s open smile and moved in for another try, this time capturing thin, dark lips and drawing out a soft moan. Pulling back after a long, breathless moment, he met Glitch’s eyes.
“Does that mean the talking part is over?” Glitch asked.
“Yes.”
“Good,” Glitch suddenly grinned playfully. “Since I don’t have enough coordination to ravage you the way I want to, go fetch me a wheelchair. I think it’s about time we go burn some shit!”
Cain fell over laughing, draped over Glitch’s legs and completely loving the expression on the other man’s face.
